I grew up messing about in boats so it was inevitable that I found a career in the boating industry. I joined Texaco Overseas Tankship as a cadet and it was here, in the British Merchant navy, that I acquired the discipline and skills that would form the basis of my career.
I moved ashore and into the rapidly growing yachting sector. I spent time as a Yacht Broker and member of the YBDSA and also as a Service Manager before becoming a Captain.
As yachts became superyachts the certification followed suit and I obtained my Master Yachts 3000grt as well as my Chief Engineer <200grt <1500kW MEOL.
Regulations continued to expand to cover the industry and absorb it fully into the Merchant Shipping world with STCW, MARPOL, SOLAS, MLC 2006, ISM/ISPS etc. Flag State Codes and Class surveys improved as the drive for safety and protection of the environment took centre stage.
I have been a Captain for over 30 yrs of which 20+ yrs as Captain of superyachts.
These years included multiple shipyard refits and new builds, multiple Class and Flag surveys including Port State inspections under Paris MoU. ISM has been the main tool for the drive towards a safer culture and I have had multiple internal and external audits for both ISM and ISPS. I am now qualified as ISM/DPA Auditor.
As Captain of LEGEND we achieved two world firsts; 1st superyacht on the planet to be MLC 2006 certified and 1st superyacht on the planet to have a Chief Stewardess certified >500grt on the PYA GUEST scheme, my wife Caroline.
